Napa Wine Trip Review
Posted this to r/wine but thought folks here might find the info helpful as well.
Thursday - Flew into Sacramento. Stopped at Caymus-Suisun on the way back to Napa. They are open late on Thursdays and serve by the glass. Beautiful grounds and the building is stunning. Had a glass of the Caymus California to start and it made me long for a glass of regular Caymus. What does that tell you??? LOL Went for the regular next and yup, still tasted like Caymus. At least the view was nice and the company was excellent!
Friday — Lunch at La Cheve. A bit of a wait but the food was really good. Highly recommended. Then off to Tank Garage Winery. The old gas station/garage building was super cool. The staff was wonderful and funny. The labels are hip. Interesting model in that they make 200-300 cases of a wine and don’t make it again. Had blends of a lot of lesser known varietals. One decent red that tasted a bit like a Gamay but wasn’t. Would be a great summer red. Didn’t get into the bigger stuff because we ran out of time before we had to get to Hall.
Took our friends here last time and they immediately joined the wine club. The member’s tasting was great and covered a wide range of their offerings. They finished with Kathryn Hall, a quintessential Napa Cab IMHO. Jack’s Masterpiece is another favorite. Brought some bottles of both of those home. I could stop here every day of a Napa visit. A favorite winery for sure!
Dinner was back in Napa at Celadon. Relaxed atmosphere, good food with excellent presentation. We had the halibut, salmon, and two orders of lamb at the table. Went with a Foxen Pinot from Bien Nacido to switch things up a bit.
Saturday — Started the day with a tour, tasting, and lunch at Kenzo. Stunning grounds and buildings. Video game money can build one helluva winery! LOL. Interesting that 80% of the wine is shipped to Japan. No club but you can purchase. The Ai Cab was wonderful. So delicate and nuanced compared to the typical Napa Cab. But at $280 a bottle…..pass. The real standout for me was the Sei Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc. I’m not a big champagne/sparkling guy but this was good. I prefer Dom for champagne and this is the first sparkling wine that has come close for me. Light lemon color, notes of lychee, vanilla, brioche. Light on the bubbles. Such an elegant wine. It’s $110 and took home several bottles. Worth the tasting!
Stopped in the Mayacamas tasting room in Napa before dinner. I enjoyed the Cab the most. A bit more old world in style. Probably the most minerality of anything we tasted this weekend. I enjoyed it but the rest of the group wasn’t a fan. Still bought some. Guess I get to enjoy those bottles by myself! LOL
Cole’s Chop House for dinner. A Napa staple. We had a table outside and it was windy as hell. Waiters and customers alike were doing their best in the situation. Excellent steak, $30 corkage, and the hash brown…..order it with onions, bacon, and Gruyere. You’ll thank me. The bread pudding….divine! I want to go back again just for the dessert!
Sunday — Started with breakfast at Model Bakery. Get the Original Breakfast Sandwiich. And buy a few more English muffins to take home with you. Soooo Good!! Then off to Frog’s Leap at 10am. Really wanted to like this wine. Love their story, emphasis on sustainability, dry farming, etc. But the wine was just ok. The Zin was the best one of the bunch, at least for value. The Cab was thin and flat. I’d drink it I you gave me a glass but didn’t make the purchase list. It was ultimately a 2 hour experience and we enjoyed it. But the wine didn’t live up to the reputation.
Ended the day at Walt in Napa after some lunch at the Oxbow market. I’m a big Pinot fan and enjoy the variety of expressions that they offer. Bob’s Ranch and Clos Pepe are two of my favorite. Love Pinot with some substance to it. And Shea from Willamette Valley is so elegant and refined. Rounded out a case to send home with a few of these. Already looking forward to the next trip and exploring some more new to us wine!
