Insurance cost simply reflects the cost to repair/rebuild and the risk of loss.  I certainly don't want to be on the hook for the loss of my home and rebuilding it after the fire. I prefer to pay a tiny fraction of that cost each year. If the cost of the insurance approaches the cost of a total loss (has it?) that is a signal you are living in a location almost guaranteed to have a loss in the next year or two. Time to move.
