I personally just made a video, opening up every door/drawer in my place so I have at least video evidence of it. Serial numbers are better, but for most people just having that 2-4 minute video is good enough. It will at the very least jog your memory of what was supposed to be there, or what might have gone missing. I also do the same when renting to someone, or rented in the past, and make sure I get a 1 second blip of them, maybe a second of the contracat we're about to sign, to basically say this place was empty when we made the video, everything worked, and X owner/renter were present, and it's clear what we're doing.
