It’s hard. People often downplay things that don’t impact them personally. This hits me hard because I have family who lost everything but their lives from this fire. But it’s hard to wrap your head around how terrifying a natural disaster is if you haven’t lived through one. During hurricane Ian, a crazy number of people were unable to comprehend how terrifying a major hurricane is. But having lived through that, I can attest that it’s nightmare inducing. Thankfully most people will never have to live through a disaster (though they are happening with greater frequency thanks to climate change). That’s why they don’t get it
