In this current climate, so long as the non-admitted carrier is a reputable/well established company, I wouldn't be afraid of it. Some people are highly spooked by non-admitted policies. Certainly, it is best to be in an admitted situation when reasonable/possible. But that doesn't mean that they are all "the Wild West" as some may believe. The FAIR plan is extremely over-extended and facing incredible losses beyond what the State has the capacity to pay right now. I would advise talking to a local agent who is able to write either option for you.
