Taking the family to California?

Taking the family to California? Hi all, We’re taking our family to SoCal for ten days in February, and I could really use some local wisdom. Visiting California has been a long-time dream, and we finally managed to carve out time to travel together as a family (two adults + three teens). We also lucked out with a great deal on flights from Europe to LAX next month. We’re fairly seasoned travelers and comfortable in big cities across Europe and Asia—but LA seems like a *very* different beast. To be honest, after reading about traffic, parking costs, and homelessness, I’ve had brief moments of “should we just cancel the whole thing?” 😅 So that’s where I’m hoping for some advice: can we make this trip worthwhile? We’re a pretty laid-back family and usually avoid over-planning or jam-packed itineraries. That said, LA feels like a place where *some* planning is probably smart. Since we don’t have friends in LA to show us around, my thinking is that about five days should be enough to see the “classic” sights and get a feel for the LA vibe, using Santa Monica as a base. After that, we’re planning to drive south to San Diego with a base at Mission bay or Gaslamp Quarter. Getting around is my biggest concern! Our initial plan was to rent a car for the entire stay, but since we already have transport from LAX to Santa Monica and the hotel charges over $70 per night for parking, I’m now considering Uber + Metro while we’re in LA. That said… I also don’t want to accidentally put my family in dangerous situations or spend half the vacation stuck in transit. Here’s our rough plan right now: Day 1–2: Santa Monica + Venice Beach Day 3: Universal Studio Day 4: Walk of Fame, Hollywood Sign, Griffith Observatory Day 5: Westfield Century City (shopping) Day 6: Drive to San Diego Day 7-10:Balboa Park (including the zoo), La Jolla, Torrey Pines, Eat well, drink well, and relax! Day 11: Drive back to LAX Does this sound reasonable? And are there any obvious mistakes or “rookie traps” in this plan? Appreciate any honest input—especially from locals or people who’ve done LA with teens. Thanks in advance!
