The California 2018 General Election is this coming TUESDAY, the 6th of November.

The California 2018 General Election is this coming TUESDAY, the 6th of November. ## **VOTING INFORMATION** ## In 53 of the state's 58 counties, polling places will be open from 7am until 8pm. You can find your polling place at https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/polling-place/ In the remaining five, **including San Mateo and Sacramento counties**, there are no polling places in this election (thanks to an experimental program), but you can vote by mail or vote in person at one of several regional voting centers or at the county elections office. All voting centers will close by 8pm on Tuesday. In addition, there are dropbox locations, and ballots must be dropped in those dropboxes no later than 8pm on Tuesday. Locations can be found at https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voters-choice-act/. **Vote by mail ballots** must be EITHER (a) returned to a polling place or voting center *in the same county* no later than 8pm on Tuesday OR (b) postmarked by Tuesday and received by the county elections office no later than Friday. See https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voter-registration/vote-mail/#vote-by-mail for details. **California supports same-day voter registration** (it's called "conditional voter registration"). **HOWEVER, same-day registration CANNOT BE DONE AT A POLLING PLACE**. You can only do this at specific locations in your county. Please consult https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voter-registration/conditional-voter-reg/ for links for the individual county websites. **California does not generally require voter ID to vote**, however there are some edge cases in which it is required under HAVA. The most common situation in which this is required is for new voters who did not provide their drivers' license number or the last four digits of their social security number when they registered. Details on acceptable identification can be found at https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voting-resources/voting-california/what-bring/. ## **A SUMMARY OF THE THINGS BEING VOTED ON** ## Statewide, voters will be voting on: * all 80 members of the state Assembly * 20 of the state's 40 State Senators * all of the state's 53 Congresspeople. * US Senate * all eight statewide constitutional offices (Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, Controller, Treasurer, Attorney General Insurance Commissioner, Superintendant of Public Instruction) * members of the State Board of Equalization * 11 ballot propositions, consisting of two legislatively referred bond measures, two voter initiative bond measures, one initiative constitutional amendment, one combined intiative constitutional amendment and statute, and five initiative statutes * retention of two Justices of the State Supreme Court (State Supreme Court Justices are appointed and then must be reconfirmed by the voters every dozen years). * retention of numerous Justices of the Court of Appeal In addition, most counties and many cities have local ballot measures, local school board elections, county supervisor elections, city council elections, and elections to miscellaneous local boards. ## **MORE DETAILS: UNITED STATES SENATE** ## The candidates for United States Senate are incumbent Senator (and former San Francisco Mayor) [Dianne Feinstein](https://feinsteinforca.com/) and State Senator [Kevin de Leon](https://www.kevindeleon.com/) ## **MORE DETAILS: STATEWIDE CONSTITUTIONAL OFFICES** ## * **Governor**: the candidates for Governor are the incumbent Lt. Proposition 9 would have been an initiative statute to split the state into three, but it was removed from the ballot by the California Supreme Court pending a court case challenging the legality of the initiative. If the initiative is deemed legal, it will appear on the ballot in 2020, probably with another number. (For a more light hearted look at the propositions, please consider these [haiku](https://www.instagram.com/p/BplpOGmAh_y/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=wf2j7vwafnqs).) ## **MORE DETAILS: JUDICIAL RETENTION** ## California requires that judges, once appointed, undergo retention elections every twelve years.
