Assuming you are implying that the "Big one" will kill you, that's not really true. This is not "San Andreas" starring The Rock. The city will not be leveled by a tidal wave and fall into the ocean. Most of the worst case scenarios for a major earthquake would see perhaps 1-3k deaths in the whole San Francisco Bay Area. That's a LOT, but it's still way less that 1% of the population. You don't really need to be too afraid of dying in an earthquake. Shit here is mostly built to withstand it. What you do need to worry about is the very very real possibility that if you live here long enough, it will happen ([72% chance of M6.7+ before 2042](https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2016/3020/fs20163020.pdf)). If it is on the larger end of things, like \~M8, then unless we totally overhaul the city before it hits, the cities infrastructure will be crippled. No power, water, gas. Bridges and Highways are unsuitable to use and are closed for extensive repairs. The city basically ceases to function. There will plenty of people working around the clock to help residents, but your life as you know it will be on hold for several months at the least. You need to be able to get by until help arrives. In that case, if you own a home, if it survives will largely be based on where in the city it is, and what it is made out of. But that's not as important... Far more to the point. **BE PREPARED.** Have an emergency/earthquake kit. Pack at least 3 days of water for everyone in your home/apartment, as well as non-perishable food. Have an emergency radio, with extra batteries. Have multiple flashlights. First Aid Kits. Do you like camping? Half of that can double as emergency gear. TLDR: When the big one hits you will probably not die so you should prepare for surviving it.
