I would avoid it. If you must stay around Arden, the two complexes between the mall and Cal Expo (Fountains and Palms) are generally safe. But be warned, there are a ton of students living there so you'll be dealing with loud neighbors. I'd take a look at West Sac if you can, it's turning into a pretty decent area and it's right next to downtown.
