All right, here goes on advice. I’m not a jerk and definitely don’t mean to be holier-than-thou, but you know. Free advice is worth... First of all, just congratulating you on what you did this week to better your financial situation. Signing up to contribute 10% to a 401(k)? Increasing your savings to $300? Hell yeah. The \~optimal\~ move is to pay down the credit card aggressively, but I’m going to say — you might consider starting a Roth IRA and putting in, like... $20 a month. Even if it feels silly. Just something. Then bump it up when you can. It’ll feel good to have it. Then see where you can free up budget to chip away at the debt. I think there’s probably room to save on groceries while still enjoying yourself. Could you do cheaper steaks and wine, or a smaller quantity? Think making the steak an accent to the meal or buying just one bottle of wine and savoring it. Can you make the local seafood a special occasion thing? Obviously good food is important to you, so to find a balance and some cash to throw at that credit card, can you cut some costs at home and keep the great social meals out? I don’t think you should take riding lessons again, given your mixed experience in the past and the fact that it’s expensive. Can you hold off on the weightlifting gym with coaching for a while, too? Are there workouts you’d enjoy that you can do for free or a low cost? My neighborhood has had lots of yoga in the park, bootcamp workout type things pop up during COVID that are pretty cheap and also directly supporting a local business. Tbh motorcycles don't really appeal to me so this is probably easy for me to say: do you need this? It seems like you like yours and ride it a lot, so keep it if you want to, but I did want to mention the possibility of selling the motorcycle, driving that paid-off car, and freeing up almost $500/month. That could almost fully fund a Roth IRA and have you feeling a lot more secure in a few years. You might want to look at r/ynab, which is a tool that helps you quickly gain control of your money, or the Dave Ramsey baby steps. I feel like right now is a golden opportunity to get the full picture of your financial situation and use your new, higher salary intentionally. Almost a continuation of the work you started in this money diary. I didn't mean to also write you a novel! Hopefully there's something useful in there. Please say hi to Mandoughlorian and your pup for me 💛
