Home Destroyed in Tennessee Wild Fire
Home Destroyed in Tennessee Wild Fire
A few days ago, I was informed of the devastating news that my mothers home was unfortunately caught up in the Pigeon Forge and Wears Valley Wildfire in Tennessee. It appears that the mountain was evacuated and dozens of homes had been destroyed along with my 65 year old mothers.
It appears that my mother had a traditional home owners policy using American Modern. To make matters worse, my mother's insurance had lapsed due to the fact of non payment. This is clearly no fault of the insurance company and it even appears that American Modern even attempted to make two notifications to her regarding a potential lapse. It appears the policy was paid up until November 2021 and had lapsed around the end of last year. I have been told that all of her communication and billing is through E delivery, but unfortunately she is not the best with computers. For the last four months, my mother was not aware of the policy lapse. We received word of the fire and the evacuated homes. My mother called up the insurance company to ensure she was protected, but unfortunately we learned the catastrophic news that the home was no longer insured.
Right now it appears that my mother is clearly in a bind and we are unsure how to proceed.
Luckily there has been an overwhelming amount of support from the local community with restaurants, business and residents opening up their homes for the victims. Red Cross is on the scene and I have been told there is a small stipend to be provided for victims of the incident. My mother is currently staying with friends and has retirement savings to weather this storm.

Clearly the policy was not paid, and this is no fault of the insurance company. My mother has now been informed of the devastating news that the property is no longer there and she has found herself without insurance. As mentioned above, it appears the policy had been lapsed for a little over four months. She has spoken with American Modern, and naturally they did not wish to renew her policy, which is clearly understandable.
Would anyone have any recommendations or suggestions on how to proceed?
The home is virtually a total loss and it sounds as if demolition teams will need to come in and remove the structure. Luckily my mothers church is willing to lend a hand and the community has been very supportive.
I have been informed that the loss is deductible on her taxes, which will still help, but she is retired and is unfortunately in a low income bracket.

Are there any suggestions? Unfortunately all three of her children live out of state and we're all sick to our stomach about the calamitous news. It sounds like there isn't much that can be done. We'd love to hear any ideas
