I love open concept because I LOVE to cook and entertain and I hate the feeling of being "trapped" in the kitchen making food while my husband or guests hang out elsewhere. Since I'm the only cook of the house, having a closed off kitchen turned something I enjoyed to something that felt lonely (and sometimes resentful) if I'm literally like the only one in the kitchen cooking for a crowd and everyone is elsewhere having fun.
Now I have open concept, and it's awesome. I have an industrial strength hood vent though. It was pricey, but not more than any other part of a kitchen remodel or any other nice appliances. And I do have a huge kitchen island, probably even more than 11 ft, it's an awesome half "prep space", half "hang out cocktails and snacks station." It actually totally changed the use of our space, now family and guests hang around the kitchen island and snack and chat and hang out until pretty much dinner is served and I feel like a hibachi chef sometimes because even when I’m cooking I'm always in the middle of everything and the center of the action. It previously felt… a bit like “Cinderella off to the side."
Of course, I am not one who stresses out when I'm cooking nor can't bear to have people see a dirty dish - those are good reasons (besides smell) to have a closed off kitchen.
