California E&S Insurance

I'm with progressive now and paid $587 for 6 mos of auto ins which is due to expire in Dec and now if I want to extend it another 6 mos they're quoting $1,298 for 6: mos. I had no tickets, or accidents in my life and have never filed an insurance claim on anything. I don't get the sudden increase?
