Does anyone know yet when / how State Farm policyholders will actually be told if they're not renewed? (And related questions)
Does anyone know yet when / how State Farm policyholders will actually be told if they're not renewed? (And related questions)
Context: have an elderly relative in Bay Area who is freaking out because she has State Farm homeowners insurance and has heard on the news about the planned cancellations. She is panicked because she can't face the idea of trying to track down another insurance policy at her age (she also has some physical disabilities). So I'm trying to figure out what is happening and how it might affect her.
I checked online and the State Farm lists released this week show her in a zip code where something like 13% of the policies will not be renewed. She has received nothing from State Farm to date in the mail (old fashioned, gets only paper mail) about possible cancellation one way or the other, and she says her policy renews the beginning of June.
If you're a State Farm policy holder, insurance expert, or otherwise have insights (hint--do you perhaps work for State Farm?), these are questions I think probably a lot of people will be asking:
(1) when is it likely people will be notified they're on the cancellation list? (And how might they be officially notified?) One article says notice will be given *"between July 3 and August 20"*.)
(2) for policy holders who have renewals in the next couple of months--is it likely they will get renewal statements, followed closely by cancellation statements / partial refunds in July if they are on the list?
\- **should policy holders inquire with their State Farm agents--or just lie low?** My aunt is afraid if she asks, it might trigger someone in the State Farm bureaucracy to review her policy / property and perhaps put her on the cancellation list for whatever reason. (She's not in a high risk wildfire area, and has never made a claim in something like 25 years of having State Farm homeowners).
\- her auto insurance is with another carrier who she likes. But would it benefit her to inquire about bundling her auto with State Farm? She has a good driving record.
Have looked around on the State Farm website and elsewhere, and there seems to be nothing about how the non-renewal process will actually be rolled out. However, since the zip code information releases gives the EXACT number of policies State Farm is saying will be cancelled in each zip code, clearly the company has made some determinations of who will be axed.
Any thoughts are welcome. I have zero direct experience with State Farm, so this is new territory for me.
If you are looking for a copy of the State Farm zip code list to check your own neighborhood here's one as a .pdf
It's organized by zip code and gives the total number of policies currently in each zip code, and the total number planned for "non-renewal".
