They need to add a Lowell to the east side of town. One reason Lowell attracts so many Asian and white kids is because it’s in a predominantly Asian/White neighborhood and parents want to send their kids to schools nearby. Kids can walk to school & it’s easier to build the school community when parents can get to the school relatively easily before or after work for volunteer opps.
Making a kid take a 60-90 minute MUNI ride across town to get to school isn’t gonna make them or the parents feel like part of the school community.
If the Board truly wanted to raise up disenfranchised black and Latino kids, creating another “magnet” school like Lowell closer to the southeast part of town is the way to go.
Instead, it’s easier for racists like Ali Collins and Lopez to just lower standards and call it a day.
