Insurance companies are allowed small rate increases year over year, but every 5 years, each company has the opportunity to go to the commissioner to ask for larger increases. When you see a 50% increase, it is the result of this 5 year review and the state commissioner approving what the insurance company is asking for. This year was Wawanesa's turn. This is why rates are not negotiable unless you have discounts for multi-policy etc.
