That was my point. Your only co-conspirator in this is not that into it. You might end up feeling like you're pulling a horse through quicksand to get her out there. My first serious line of inquiry would be to ask what her vision of retirement is, and how well this fits in with it or creates opportunity cost against it. If you can agree on the life you want, and build that, and then on top of that you can afford the ranch and to outsource, one way or another, a lot of the overhead of it, by all means go for it. If not, maybe do some ranch-style vacation rentals and see how you enjoy being out there for a few weeks or a month at a time.
