Any interest in a boardgaming club?
Any interest in a boardgaming club?
As some of you know, we just took a month-long holiday to Australia to celebrate our tenth anniversary, see Australia, and to enjoy the inaugural PAX Australia convention.
One thing that we discovered "down under" was that there were these little gaming clubs in various cities and towns. Some of them were quite large. In particular, the [Canberra Games Society](http://www.cgs.asn.au/) has over 500 members and actually sponsors two fairly large gaming conventions each year! (CanCon and WinterCon, links on their website.) For those that don't know, despite being the capital of Australia, Canberra is still a fairly small city, only about the double the size of Santa Rosa.
This got us to thinking... [we have an ever-expanding library of games](http://i.imgur.com/33fDNuC.jpg) already (<- click that link for an old image, we have expanded since it was taken!) and our game nights already attract a small crowd of 20 to 30 people. Before I start making phone calls for a venue, setting up a LLC, and creating a website, logo, business cards, etc, I would like gauge the level of interest. Please note this is simply in the "that's a neat idea" phase, and there are no guarantees that it will go any further than that.
My general plan is thus:
+ Set up a weekly meeting at either our local games shop OR a local library OR a local pub OR a local business.
+ We would bring our always expanding games library to each meeting. Hopefully others will be willing to contribute as well.
+ Membership would require a nominal ($10-$20) yearly fee and proof of identification. Fees would be used for buying new library games and/or replacing damaged/lost ones.
+ Members would be allowed to "check out" any game from our library for playing. You would be responsible for any damage or loss of games that you check out (that's why we would need ID).
+ Non-members can "check out" games from the library for a smaller (~$5) one-time fee and presenting an ID as a deposit to discourage theft/damage.
+ All games would include a small paper sheet inside the box for tracking when they were played, by whom and space for comments/complaints.
**If we were to open this up to the general public, would there be interest in creating a formal group like this?** (i.e. not at our house)
