Not at fault accident while traveling
My wife’s car was rear ended causing a 3 car chain reaction accident yesterday. We are 550 miles from home attending a wedding. I have family here who took a different car and are driving home Monday. The car is technically drivable; however, the air bags attempted to deploy (dash came apart) but failed which resulted in a “airbag malfunction” message. I don’t really feel safe driving the car home in this state as I’m not confident the airbags work and scared of them deploying randomly while driving.
We placed a claim on the at fault drivers insurance as well as our own (both are progressive, though it seems likely the at fault drivers policy is inactive). The first time we called the rep said that the policy we gave (at fault driver) was inactive and he couldn’t file a claim. We called back and they took our claim and when we asked about the inactive comment from the previous rep they said they were not supposed to mention it.
I need to drive home Monday as I have a free ride via my family and have responsibilities to attend to at home. Just leaving the car in our hotel parking lot is a bit concerning to me so I’m not sure how to best handle this as our adjuster will not be working/calling until Monday (when I need to leave). We’ve talked with the hotel and they are fine with the car being here a bit longer than our stay as well as holding onto the key and giving it to the adjuster when they arrive.
Any help is appreciated, TIA.
Edit: I am from California and currently in Oregon which is where the accident happened.
