Having worked at an insurance company AND live in SD, I know it's tricky. Many areas are uninsurable by standard carriers, or the rates are sky high.
One thing to keep in mind is that your prices with the agent are most likely going to be higher, since a commission (usually a % of the premium) is paid out to the agent from the insurance company. The higher the company's rates --> the higher the agent's commission --> the higher you pay. It's generally cheaper to shop around yourself unless you need the help of an agent.
Have you tried shopping yourself? You can even use some of the Price Comparison websites. They take your details, forward it to different insurance companies, and then give you rates. Some are in real time, but some of the companies may require more info from you.
I know Insurance.com and Compare.com do Home Insurance comparisons and might be worth checking out. I don't speak for either of them, or any insurance company, though. It's possible your area may still be declined on those sites and if so then you'd end up needing to find a "high risk" or "non-standard" carrier.
