If this is a truly large tree in a backyard, cutting it down probably isn't the way to go: 1. It may be a protected tree 2. Even if you can remove it, cutting down a large tree around homes, especially with poor access is going to cost as much as trimming said tree many, many times over 3. The shade it provides is probably reducing your electric bill more than you think. When I lived in midtown my apartment neighbors removed a stand of smaller trees that weren't overhanging and my electric bill went up notably.
