Hello San Franciscans, I am planning to move to your fair city. May I ask for some advice/tips?

Advice/help getting housing would be most appreciated. The craigslist scene seems to have some nice places, but so many people have been really unresponsive, and there are scams etc.
A bit about me - I am 24, planning on driving from Pennsylvania (yikes! I have done a cross country road trip before, though...), so a big thing for me is to get a furnished sublet for the short term. That would allow me to get all of the things I need gradually while I stabilize myself.
In the short term I would be just looking for any sort of work, probably office temp jobs just to achieve some stability. But really, anything that allows me to stop burning through my savings will be a job I'd take. I am also going to be playing as much music as possible, [here is my music, because I am a shameless whore](http://soundcloud.com/dandectis), but I am under no delusions of grandeur RE: my music.
I've read a bit of doom and gloom in the other similar threads that have been posted here in the past month or so. And, quite frankly, it is giving me pause. I will have around $10K in savings when I move out there in another 2 months or so. It just seems like there is a lot of negativity that I missed when I visited the place a few weeks ago.
Anything that anyone can tell me to give me more perspective on this would be greatly appreciated.
