Guys I live in Fort McMurray Alberta and you may know we just had Canada’s most expensive natural disaster, the Fort McMurray wildfire. It burned for over a year and destroyed 2500 homes and businesses. It looked nothing like this.
I see a lot of people are arguing about the trees burning, so allow me to share some of my insight about the even that transpired up here in Canada.
During the evacuation, I was in gridlock traffic in my neighbourhood, the flames were about 400-600 meters away at the start of my journey. I got out of my truck to speak to my wife in her vehicle in front of me and the air temperature was around 65 degrees Celsius. When we finally got out of my neighbourhood we drove by the fire about 50 feet from the road and the paint bubbled on the passenger side of my truck because of the intense heat. The fire tore through entire neighbourhoods in just minutes. The most incredible part of the fire was when it jumped the Athabasca river. The fire came to head on top of a big hill. On the other side, a 100 foot drop off to the river. The river at this point is probably 600 feet wide, and without hesitation the fire crossed that river and continued to burn everything on the other side.
