Airbnb fire caused water damage to my belongings — insurance denied my claim. What can I do next?

Airbnb fire caused water damage to my belongings — insurance denied my claim. What can I do next? Hi all, Location: New Jersey Back in May 2025, I rented an Airbnb in New Jersey. The plan was to stay there from May 2025 through January 2026. I had an internship in New York from May to August, but I wanted to stay longer to enjoy Jersey before heading back home to Pittsburgh. In August, a fire started in an abandoned house next door and spread to the top of our home. The building was a two-apartment style home with one unit on the top and one on the bottom. The apartment above ours caught on fire, and firefighters had to drench the entire building, including the abandoned house, to put it out. This caused water to seep through the floors and drip from the ceiling, damaging almost all of our belongings. I had my two emotional support animals staying with me at the Airbnb, and once we were allowed to leave, the Red Cross gave us some money for a hotel. I ended up using that to get back to Pittsburgh since I didn’t have anywhere else to go. When I got back, it was hard to find a place that would take me and both my ESAs, so I had to stay at another Airbnb for about a month before finding something more stable. I filed a claim with Airbnb’s insurance (Generali Global Assistance) asking for $1,200 to cover the couch I had bought while staying there. There was well over $1,200 in total damage, but I only asked for enough to replace that one item. The insurance company denied my claim, saying that since the fire started in the neighboring property and wasn’t caused by the Airbnb host, it’s not covered under their liability policy. They told me to try filing with my own renters or homeowners insurance, but I don’t have either. I’m 19, and this whole process has been really overwhelming to deal with on my own. I’m not sure what to do next. • Can I appeal Airbnb’s decision? • Is there any way to hold the host or Airbnb responsible for the damages? • Would small claims court be an option, and if so, would that need to be in New Jersey or Pennsylvania? Any advice or direction on what steps I can take next would mean a lot.
