Same company towed me from a handicap spot once. I had my handicap license up, properly displayed and everything. When I showed up to get my car, I received the same response "pay now or court later + fees." I told them I'd pay to get my car, but they have to deal with a chargeback just like last time. Apparently that pissed them off, because the cashier said one of the drivers had my keys and wouldn't be back until 1am. So I had to wait there for 2 hours and the kicker... pay an extra day fee because they release my vehicle until 1am despite the fact that I was there at 11pm. Predatory doesn't begin to describe their practices. It's incredible that we've allowed them to behave this way with impunity. I understand and share your desire for vindication; maybe someone with less to lose will decide this is their hill.
