Yes and no. If you are footing the mortgage, you have insurance! Or, you go bankrupt, which definitely sucks, but the 'guy getting fucked' is the bank.
If you own your home free and clear, then you simply lose the house,

This! On a national scale, we have a long history of trying to pretend nature doesn't exist, by demanding (and paying for) 'a right to a house even if it's in a bad place to have a house'.
