Can a couple live comfortably on $120K a year in/around Folsom California?
Seeking insight on whether it's possible for a couple to survive on $83K/year (initially) in the greater Sacramento/Folsom area. Eventually my girlfriend will be employed also, but I wouldn't expect her to earn more than approximately $41K/year. So a theoretical joint salary of $123K/year, which is actually about equal to our current joint income in the Midwest. We mostly despise the weather and geography of the Midwest, but the plus side is we don't have to live paycheck to paycheck out here.
In contrast, we love the Placer/El Dorado county areas, but are concerned we would have to make too many quality of life sacrifices.
Rumor is that home prices are forecasted to drop within the next year, so perhaps we should hold out for another year. I am also concerned about the cost/availability of homeowners insurance.
Perhaps more importantly, since we'd be renting initially, is it possible to find a decent 2bd/2ba rental in the region for around $2400/month that isn't in a sketchy neighborhood? From what I see online, probably not. I struggle with the notion of blowing $3K+/month on a rental.
What say you? Would we resent our quality of life on $123K/year in that region, assuming no credit card or vehicle debt and a $3K mortgage/rent?
Thanks
