I’m going to weigh in here with real world experience hosting campers on my land for 2 years now. I have 10 acres in Aptos and host campers through platforms like Hipcamp which has its own insurance policy to cover campers. Over the past 2 years I have never had any dangerous campers or any concerns with fire safety. I understand that our own experience is just that, our experience, and other people's will differ but if you live on the premise and have strict rules and a love for the land you can be damn sure that fire safety is your #1 priority. I think it's also important to recognize the demographic of people who are looking to camp in the woods generally have a respect for nature that is much greater than the average person who is just looking for a cheap place to stay for the night. The reality is that people are going to host campers whether or not it is legal, so having some rules and regulations in place, especially regarding fire, is a great thing!
It’s also important to note that the “1300 campgrounds” is the maximum amount of properties that are eligible to do this legally under these rules. Hosting random people on your land is not for everyone and most people up here have no interest in doing such things, this is something we love to do and helps pay bills for our ever increasing cost of living here in SC county.
A lot of people have legitimate concerns with this plan but I think this is a beautiful way to get more people to experience this place a lot of us call home and make a little extra money doing it. I should also note, this isn't crazy money. This may cover our grocery bills for the month or if it's a really good month, daycare.
