Considering moving to LA from SD, am I crazy?
House hunting in SD has been driving me crazy and I've been looking at listings in LA as a result. Inventory seems far more plentiful and prices are lower as well. I've had this idea in the back of my mind for a long time now and lately I've been wanting to make the move more and more.
I've lived in SD for a long time and I've visited LA plenty of times. Barring the traffic and the crime, everything else just seems bigger and better. I compiled a rough list of pros and cons as I see it.
Pros:
Younger, more diverse crowd. It's basically all old people and military down here.
Much better food, especially Asian food.
Home prices are significantly lower with far more choices in my price range.
Much bigger population making finding niche interest groups easier.
Cons:
Traffic is much worse in LA. However I have no commute so this isn't nearly as impactful to me today.
Mansion tax/Homeowner's insurance in certain areas are out of control
Crime rates
Can't just hop over the border to TJ
Mostly worse weather but this is area dependent
I've been looking in a few specific neighborhoods.
Palos Verdes: Most like SD. Still close enough to LA to do stuff, furthest away from everything but has the best weather which is good because I don't like the heat. Low crime. Cheaper home prices compared to coastal SD but kind of defeats the purpose of moving to LA due to its distance.
Pacific Palisades: Beach community much closer to the city. I don't know much about it except I read insurance is nearly impossible to get there due to wildfire risk. Subject to ULA tax.
Beverly HIlls/Hollywood HIlls area: Higher crime, hotter/worse weather, much more centrally located, close to shopping and restaurants, closeish to Asian food in Pasadena which is important to me. Lower prices on homes(especially in Hollywood Hills) with lots of inventory.
As a single, mid 30s Asian male, what would you guys do? Am I just having the grass is greener syndrome?
