The smell permeates everything, especially the insulation. My sister's house had a small fire inside during remodeling. Drywall and insulation was replaced and the wood was encapsulated, all by a company that specialized in fire damage. She walked in to inspect, and immediately smelled smoke. They worked for another week, no difference. The third time they found a small bit of insulation under the stairs that was difficult to get to and solved the problem.
Find a company that specializes in fire and smoke damage repairs and get a quote from them. Ordinary contractors don't have the knowledge and experience to solve it (even if they say they do).
Fortunately we don't have to deal with smoke damage, our house in the alphabet streets burned to the ground.
