Was chuckling as I read this. Thank you. I hate open concept for the reasons mentioned. The noise, the smells, looking at dirty dishes while sat on the couch. I'm not in NYC, but I think one thing Americans don't appreciate is a good design in a small space. Because a lot of places just have space and it gets wasted.
