Landlord filed fraudulent claim with homeowners insurance to remodel then filed claim with my renters insurance to cover the deductible
Update: My insurance agent disclosed that his insurance company was unaware of his double dipping attempt and found out after he filed the claim my insurance to pay the deductible. I'm not clear if his insurance had already paid as he did not file the claim to mine until the end of May, although he said the incident happened on 2/29 but my insurance ended up paying the entire claim even after they found me not liable, due to his threatening to sue them.
I've advised my agent that I am going to report this to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. I've also requested the entire case file from them. I don't know how much the claim was for.
Also, in reading the California Tenant Rights laws - This could fall under Retaliation and Harrassment and Reputation violations, which could have criminal charges. When I moved out, I took 3K of his income from him. he never responded to my moving notice. I lived in this cottage on his estate.
I moved out due to his grandson abusing my puppy and saying he wanted to murder my puppy. The child is only 5. So much more. I had to call the police after his mom was so offended and came to my door yelling at me, saying I should die. The police (it was an annonymous call) emphasized that I needed to call CPS once I moved. The mom was told that I had this conversation with the police.
So much more, but advice: don't get personally involved with your landlord and their family. Renting is a business transaction. They considered me a part of their family, but I had to protect mine, and it offended the daughter - probably causing all of this.
He did try to double dip though - so there is that intent. Perhaps I am not aware and maybe the insurance companies (his initial claim to his insurance) is going after him for fraud. I'm hoping my agent will tell me. Not sure if she can disclose that though.

I was not required to have renters insurance, but got it for my own protection. I provided it to my landlord when I moved out with a list of small things that it could be used for from having my puppy there. Just small things...easily less than 1K.
For 1.5 years he wanted to put a chef's kitchen in the little cottage on the estate. I lived in the cottage. Labor was hard to get, so it never happened. I think he didn't have the money actually.
Long story short, after I moved he filed a claim with his homeowners insurance saying that I had left the kitchen faucet on and it flooded the entire kitchen and he had to replace the entire kitchen. Of course I did not do this. Three months later to he filed a claim to my renters insurance for them to pay his homeowners insurance deductible.
Question:
This seems like double-dipping. I think the kitchen was about 20K to remodel and his insurance had a 2500 deductable. *This does not seem right and I don't understand why his homeowners insurance did not make him use my renters insurance*. I had 500K liability coverage on my insurance.
My insurance did a 6 month investigation and found me not liable. He came back and threatened to sue my insurance f they didn't pay the claim (I suspect that he was scared that he was caught and fired back with all he had to save himself). Since it was a small amount, they have decided to pay it to protect me and them.
